Newport Travel Guide
THE ITALIAN PEARL
The town of Cortina D’Ampezzo, commonly referred to simply as Cortina, is known as the “Pearl of the Dolomites”. Located in the Italian region of Veneto, the town is surrounded by the glittering, snow-topped mountains of the Dolomite Alps. Cortina is a popular destination for international jet-setters striving to live “la dolce vita” – “the good life”. Most of those who flock there come for the luxurious atmosphere (rather than the skiing).
CHARMING VILLAGE
Cortina is considered to be the loveliest destination in all of the Italian Alps – a truly luxurious place to visit. The charming town is full of narrow streets lined with gelaterias and bakeries. The picturesque church in the centre of town is surrounded by trattorias and there are plenty of fancy boutiques, cheese shops, and restaurants. On the weekends, the many well-dressed people strolling along the Corso Italia make the pedestrian thoroughfare feel downright metropolitan.
ULTIMATE SKIING
Cortina d’Ampezzo is famous for hosting the Winter Olympics in 1956 and is the ultimate destination for a ski weekend with all the “little extras”. The town is widely considered to be Italy’s answer to the popular Canadian ski resort of Whistler. Cortina has slopes galore for every level of skier, and breathtaking views to boot. Here you can ski for miles all day and then wrap up your evening at one of the many Italian restaurants or nightclubs.
